PANLAR-Merck Sharp Dohme Rheumatology-Prize for Latin America 2006
The aim of the PANLAR-Merck Rheumatology prize is to encourage clinical and basic research in all fields of Rheumatology in all Latin American member countries of PANLAR. The prize shall be awarded in recognition of an outstanding achievement in the field of Rheumatology and to encourage further research in the field. There will be two categories: Clinical and Basic Sciences, which will be rated separately. Each recipient will be awarded $5,000.00. To recognize the sponsorship of Merck Sharpe & Dohme for this prize, the name is officially acknowledged as the PANLAR-MERCK SHARP DOHME RHEUMATOLOGY PRIZE.
Awarding of the prize:
The PANLAR-MERCK SHARP DOHME RHEUMATOLOGY PRIZE(s): will be awarded at the at the 2006 PANLAR CONGRESS in Lima PERU.
Applications for the prize:
An investigator who believes he or she has made a significant contribution to the advancement of knowledge in the field of rheumatology may apply for the prize(s), as long as all the conditions stipulated below have been met. In the case of several investigators from the same group, the prize(s) will be awarded to the first investigator, and in turn it will be up to this investigator to share it with other members of the research team.
Entry conditions and application:
The following guidelines will be followed:
(1). The applicant should indicate the category for which he/she is applying (Clinical or Basic)
(2). The applicant age limit is 45 years by October 1, 2006. Prize should be for work (clinical or bench) performed within the preceding 5 years as well as for work planned and to be done over the next couple of years, if prize awarded. A 2-page (single-spaced) outline including Aims, Background, Methods and Anticipated Results of the planned research is required. Previous and current work should be documented by recent publications or presentations by the author or others, in recognized rheumatology journals and rheumatology meetings. Research work submitted for the prize must have been accepted for presentation at an important rheumatology meeting: ILAR, PANLAR, EULAR, APLAR, AFLAR, or ACR. Publications must be submitted in the English language. Please note that the outline of planned research plus publications constitute the portfolio.
(3). A biosketch (2 pages, single spaced) should be included (date of birth, graduate and postgraduate education, professional experience, academic affiliations, publications)
(4). A sponsor and a second in writing should recommend the candidate; these letters of support need to be sent directly to the Jury (see below).
(5). All application material to be submitted electronically (see below)
(6). Time-line:
- Reception of applications (portfolio, biosketch and letters of support): March 31, 2006 (Evelyn Hess: hessev@email.uc.edu)
- Distribution of application packages to Jury members: April 15, 2006
- Evaluations back to Evelyn Hess: May 30, 2006
- Tally of results and designation of awardee: June 15, 2006
- Submission of results to PANLAR President and Board of Directors: June 30, 2006
- PANLAR-MERCK SHAR DOHME PRIZES will be awarded at the PANLAR Congress in Lima: August 19-23, 2006 (exact date to be announced)
- Portfolios will be rated in the category to which they are submitted. The final score is the weighted average of the scores of the different elements of the portfolio. For the prizes to be awarded a score equal or less to 180 in a 100 (best) to 500 (worst) scale will be required. The applicant with the best score in each category will be awarded the prize. If only one applicant (regardless of the category) reaches the score, he/she will receive the full prize. If no one achieves the score of 180, the prize will not be awarded in 2006.
