IMPORTANTES AVANCES EN EL TRATAMIENTO DE LA ARTRITIS REUMATOIDE (Lima August 2006)

NEW LATINOAMERICAN MANUAL FOR RHEUMATICS DISEASES IN CHILDREN (Lima August 2006)

The Pediatric Committee of PANLAR (Pan-American League of Associations of Rheumatology) devoted its efforts to develop a book dedicated to Pediatric Rheumatology in Spanish with a the purpose of offering a quick and concise guide for the student, the pediatric resident and the pediatric rheumatologist in training. It is written in a direct style at a level not only appropriate for those coleagues interested in rheumatic diseases but also for general practitioners who need to review material for a specific disease o to obtain a quick reference when facing a particular clinical challenge.

The goals of this work have been

  1. To serve as a reference for the differential diagnosis of those illnesses which in the view of a group of experienced pediatric rheumatologists could appear in the office of the general practitioner.
  2. Provide the basis for rational use of paraclinical tests and their interpretation
  3. Provide the principles for drug selection in the management of pediatric rheumatic diseases
Special features of the Manual:
In addition to covering the clasic conditions the authors sought expert knowledge in rheumatic fever and infectious arthritis more prevalent in LatinAmerica and as such deserving special attention in this book.
  • The plethora of international collaborators from all the Americas provided us with a unique opportunity to collect and offer to the reader a series of unusual cases with photographic illustrations, we anticipate to be of great value.
  • The topics are approached in a focused way hoping to achieve an up-to-date level of review, with the knowledge that in areas such as pathogenesis and management they will become obsolete pretty soon.
  • The bibliography is mostly in the format of "recommended reading" and include the classic contributions in a given field.

Despite the fact that most of the contributors are from Latin-America we were blessed with the generous contributions of North-American and European authors.

We have a few copies of the compact disk version (printed version will be available in August of 2006, at PANLAR-PERU-06) and they are available for the national societies (rheumatologic and pediatric) by contacting Dr Graciela Espada by electronic mail ( chair Comite Ped PANLAR  gespada@fibertel.com.ar )
Thank you!

ASSESSMENT TOOLS

In order to measure disease activity, progression, and change with therapy in rheumatic diseases, it is important to use accurate, reliable, and feasible and validated outcome measures that can ideally be employed in longitudinal cohorts, clinical trials, and clinical practice.

Here we present and update of assessment tools employed in rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondilytis making emphasis in validated instruments in Spanish versions.

We hope to enlarge this list in a near future. Collaborations from everywhere are welcome.
